I don't often like my own work but this has instantly become one of my favourite videos/drawings. I tried to understand why that was and came to this conclusion : inspired source material begets inspired fanart! In other words, it's easy to reach the sky when you're standing on the shoulder of a giant. It took me a whole week to do - and when I say that I mean seven from-dusk-till-dawn days.
The two opposing tunes (in the video) are meant not only as a fun Halloween twist but also show the ambivalence of the creatures : grotesque and friendly but also dangerous and dark - which, to me, was reminiscent of "Where the Wild Things Are."
As always, I took some liberty with the source material. I believe this is needed in order for the artist to exist and in order for recreation to bloom into creation. In this instance, I made some of the monsters scarier or altered their outfit, I added or modified elements here and there to amplify darkness or elegance. I also gave the main monster a face but that's because, the video stills that I had of its face showed a few stylised patterns (which I may have hallucinated!) which looked like nostrils and an eye hole - maybe for the human in the costume to see? I hope, however, not to have denatured the source material in so doing. I spent a lot of time designing that desk and what sits on top of it, and making it all as posh as I could because it serves as the metonymic representation of the entire hotel and boy is that place smart!
I once contemplated making some Smokey Saloon fanart when PJ released that video, but I never got around to doing it. So I was glad that one of the saloon creatures escaped the saloon to visit the hotel! That gave me my chance to draw it! Do you recognise all of the creatures I drew?
